PACB Thanksgiving Message
As we reflect on all the things and people we are grateful for, we realize there are once again many more empty chairs around dinner tables- permanently empty due to Covid-19 or other illnesses or temporarily vacant due to work requirements, military service, or simply Covid-related restraints or disagreements. Our thoughts are with all those who have suffered losses and/or are celebrating away from their family or loved ones this season.
It is easy to recognize the ever-increasing needs of clients or friends, but we often overlook or underestimate the needs of our families, much less our very own need for additional support in such challenging times. Regularly reassessing our own situation is crucial lest we become too overextended to help or serve anyone. It takes courage to re-direct and here we want to extend our wholehearted support and appreciation for Melissa Cardine, MSN, RN, BCPA who last week made the difficult decision to step down from the Board. While saddened by her departure, we take comfort knowing that it is what is best for her, her family, her business, and her clients. We know Melissa will continue to passionately advocate for the growth of our profession, thank her once again for her service, and wish her all the very best going forward.
Furthermore, we would like to express our gratitude for all BCPAs and health care advocates who are working tirelessly to make peoples’ journeys through the healthcare system a bit easier, safer, and their outcomes and experiences better.
Thus on behalf of the Patient Advocate Certification Board, I wish you, your families, and loved ones a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
With gratitude,
Heidi B. Kummer, MD, MPH, BCPA
Interim-President, Patient Advocate Certification Board
